“Transsexual” is a more specific term that fits under the transgender umbrella. This word can be contentious and shouldn’t be used unless someone specifically asks to be referred to this way.

Read on to learn more about the difference between being transgender and being transsexual, why someone might choose one term over the other, and more.

Sex and gender can be considered in biological and cultural ways. Biological sex refers to a person’s anatomy. Typically, a biological male has a penis and testes. A biological female has a vagina and ovaries. Gender is rooted more in culture and environment.

Most cultures have social customs and activities that are associated with males and females. For example, children may be given certain gender-specific toys to play with. In some cultures, this might mean toy cars and trucks for boys and dolls and dress-up clothes for girls. Likewise, the children might be raised to take on certain roles – or have certain expectations – as adults, based on their gender.

In general terms, the word transgender refers to people who identify differently from their biological sex. For example, a transgender person who is biologically female may feel that a male identity is a better fit and take the following steps:

• Use a male name instead of a female name.

• Use male pronouns instead of female pronouns.

• Dress as a man.

 • Engage in activities that are typically associated with men in that culture.

What exactly does it mean to be transgender?

The term transgender can mean different things to different people. There are a number of other labels individuals who are transgender use to describe their gender.

This can be confusing at first, particularly if you or someone you know think they might be transgender. For example, a person who was assigned a female sex at birth and has a male sense of self could be categorized as transgender.

A person who was assigned male at birth and has a female sense of self could also be categorized as transgender.

Trans woman

A trans woman is a woman who was assigned male at birth. Trans women may experience gender dysphoria and may transition; this process commonly includes hormone replacement therapy and sometimes sex reassignment surgery, which can bring relief and resolve feelings of gender dysphoria.

Trans women may be heterosexual, bisexual, homosexual, asexual, or identify with other terms (such as queer).

Trans man

A trans man is a man who was assigned female at birth. The label of transgender man is not always interchangeable with that of transsexual man, although the two labels are often used in this way. Transgender is an umbrella term that includes different types of gender variant people (including transsexual people).

Many trans men choose to undergo surgical or hormonal transition, or both (see sex reassignment therapy), to alter their appearance in a way that aligns with their gender identity or alleviates gender dysphoria.

In some eastern cultures, the concept of transgender is set apart as neither male nor female, but an identity which is in between. For culturally speaking, intersex people and transgender people exist in the same group and are called the third gender.

So how do you distinguish between trans men and trans women? Well, trans men look like men. Trans womenlook like women. If they are in the early stages of their hormonal therapy, they may look somewhere in between, until they can pass (if they choose to pass, or if they are able to pass).

Not all trans people have “passing privilege”, or the ability to pass easily due to certain body characteristics.

What's the difference between being transgender or transsexual and having an intersex condition?

People who identify as transgender or transsexual are usually people who are born with typical male or female anatomies but feel as though they’ve been born into the “wrong body.

” For example, a person who identifies as transgender or transsexual may have typical female anatomy but feel like a male and seek to become male by taking hormones or electing to have sex reassignment surgeries.

People who have intersex conditions have anatomy that is not considered typically male or female. Most people with intersex conditions come to medical attention because doctors or parents notice something unusual about their bodies. In contrast, people who are transgendered have an internal experience of gender identity that is different from most people.

People who identify as transgender or transsexual also face discrimination and deserve equality. We also believe that people with intersex conditions and folks who identify as transgender or transsexual can and should continue to work together on human rights issues; however, there are important differences to keep in mind so that both groups can work toward a better future.
